Energy Costs Still Climbing? Consider A Professional Energy Audit

Various factors in your home can cause energy costs to rise. Sometimes, simply reducing the amount of electricity you use or setting back your thermostat is the easiest way to reduce these costs, but if you stop there you’ll miss out on many more ways to save energy in your home. A home energy audit can pinpoint exactly why and where your home is losing energy. Once you have this information, you can take the necessary steps to correct the problems and reduce your energy costs.

A professional auditor will employ various equipment and techniques – such as infrared cameras, blower doors tests, surface thermometers and furnace efficiency meters – to determine your home’s energy efficiency. Furthermore, a home energy audit will determine how efficient your heating and cooling systems are working and ways you can conserve electricity and hot water.

Before the home energy audit begins, list existing problems in the home such as drafty rooms and places where condensation is occurring. Provide this list along with copies of your energy bills to the auditor. Furthermore, have the following information on hand for the auditor before he arrives at your home. Auditors use this information to help determine what to check for during the audit:

  • Who is home during the day?
  • What are the thermostat settings for the winter and summer months?
  • What are the thermostat settings during the day and during the night?
  • How many people live in the home?
  • Do you use every room in the home?

These answers will give the auditor more insight into how the home is run, and will allow him to provide you with customized information on what you can do to reduce your energy costs and lower your utility bills.
