Most people who suffer from allergies know that trees, flowers and other plants outdoors can trigger allergy attacks, but what about indoor air quality? You may not realize it, but the air inside your home is more contaminated than the air outdoors, sometimes much more. Dust, smoke, pet dander and even excess moisture that harbors bacteria can lead to or aggravate allergies. What can you do when you’re tired of red eyes, sneezing and a runny nose?
Your indoor air quality can be vastly improved by implementing these measures in your home:
- Reduce excess humidity or moisture where possible. Consider mold-proof shower curtains for the bathrooms. Repair any cracks that are letting humidity into your home. You might also consider portable or whole-house dehumidifiers to help remove excess moisture.
- Ensure that ducts are properly sealed. When your ductwork is leaking air through holes, places where joints aren’t properly sealed, or at vents and registers, it can mean an increase in pollutants in your home.
- If pet dander or smoke are triggers for your allergies, eliminate the
source. Those who smoke indoors should take it outside; it you have a pet that lives indoors, consider keeping it outside or bathing/brushing it regularly to cut down on dander. - Vacuum and dust regularly to remove household dust.
Consider covering your mattress and pillows with allergen-proof covers, and wash your linens every week in hot water to keep dust mites to a minimum.
Reduce your allergies this summer by improving indoor air quality. While you can’t control outdoor factors that contribute to your symptoms, you can certainly control those inside your home.
