With summer roaring through the San Joaquin Valley, the worst thing that could happen is the demise of your air conditioning system. There are a number of steps you can perform yourself to help keep you comfortable for the rest of the summer while keeping your home as energy efficient as possible.
Clean Outdoor Unit
One of the most important components of your air system is the condensing coil in the outdoor unit. It is responsible for blowing hot air collected from indoors, outside. If it is blocked by leaves, dirt, grass clippings or other debris, it will not be able to perform at maximum efficiency. You can easily sweep away visible blockage and spray it down with a water hose occasionally to rinse off clods of dirt.
Replace Your Air Filters
If too much dust and other debris has built up on your air filters, conditioned air will not be able to flow through easily. This makes your air system overcompensate, driving energy bills up. By replacing your filters regularly, you will avoid this dilemma and keep your filters at their maximum efficiency levels.
Shade Your Windows
It is not uncommon for up to 20 percent of homeowners’ energy consumption to be used to counter heat from sunlight radiating into the home. You can reduce this greatly by drawing your sunlight-facing windows’ curtains during the day. You can also purchase solar screens that are specially weaved to keep out sunlight.
Schedule Preventive Maintenance
To make sure your air conditioning is running optimally throughout the summer, have it inspected by an HVAC specialist. They will perform a thorough check of eachcomponent to make sure they aren’t in danger of failing or performing poorly. If you have not had a maintenance check in over a year, consider scheduling one immediately.
