The federal Energy Star program was created to help consumers make more responsible appliance choices by offering them a quick and easy way to identify products which offer superior energy efficiency. There are specific requirements appliances must meet in order to earn the Energy Star seal, including:
- Operating efficiencies which exceed minimum government requirements by at least 10 percent
- Performance specifications that match or exceed those preferred by consumers
- The ability to recover any difference in initial price through savings on utility bills
- The use of non-proprietary operating technologies that are offered by multiple manufacturers to prevent monopolization of the market
There are two major benefits of using Energy Star appliances, which include heaters, furnaces, air conditioners and water heaters. First, they help you save money because they don’t use as much electricity as conventional alternatives. Over the expected life of the appliance, which is at least 10 years for most types of HVAC equipment, you can enjoy significant electricity savings, and the more Energy Star appliances you install in your home, the greater your savings will be. If the time has come to replace your HVAC equipment or major appliances, choosing products that bear this seal is highly recommended.
Second, you will be doing the environment a big favor. Not only do these appliances emit fewer greenhouse gases and decrease the impact of your carbon footprint, they also put less demand on your local power grid, which in turn lowers the negative environmental effects of electricity production. Virtually all major appliance manufacturers offer energy-efficient alternatives, making it easy for you to stick to trusted brand names while doing your part to protect the environment and help build a greener tomorrow.
