Autumn is in the air in Fresno, Ca, and the cold season will not be long behind it. Prepare your heating system now to be sure that it keeps your family nice and warm during the winter months. Performing a few simple checks on your boiler will help you know if you need to call in the professionals.
Simple Boiler Maintenance
It is important to check on your boiler before starting it up for the first time during the cold season. Here is a list of simple things to look for:
- Perform a visual check of your boiler. Look for any cracks in the system, or any water leaking from the boiler. You should perform a visual inspection of your boiler both before initial start up, and on a monthly basis during use.
- After performing a visual inspection of your boiler you should fire it up and turn it on. While it is running, continue a visual inspection of the boiler looking for water leaking or steam escaping. If you see any cracks or leaks shut the system down immediately and call a professional. Never run your boiler if it is cracked or leaking.
- Check the pressure on your boiler. Your boiler has a pressure gauge that you should check right when you start it for the first time, as well as on a monthly basis while it is in use. Consult the owner’s manual to find out what the pressure should be, and if it is outside the range of normal shut the system down and call a professional.
- Clear the area around your boiler. You do not want anything to be stored near your boiler because this is a fire hazard. You also want to be able to get at the boiler quickly in the case of an emergency. Special care should be taken to be sure nothing flammable or combustible is kept nearby.
