If you are having furnace problems, you don’t necessarily need to call an HVAC technician right away. There are several simple troubleshooting tips you can try out yourself to resolve some common issues. If none of these helps, then it’s time to get help from the experts.
- Set thermostat to heating mode: At the beginning of the heating season as the temperatures begin to drop, don’t forget to switch it from the cooling mode where it’s been set the past few months.
- Set the temperature higher than the temperature in the room where it’s located: This is a simple explanation as to why you may not be getting any heat from your furnace.
- Check circuit box: If you turn off the breaker for your heating system during the summer to make sure it doesn’t accidentally get turned on, be sure to reset it when the heating season arrives.
- Turn on the SSU switch: This is usually located on a gray box at the furnace. It looks like a light switch.
- Replace the furnace filter: This is very important to making sure you have a steady flow through your air system. If you neglect your filter for too long, the pollutants they filter from the air will form a thick screen that your conditioned air can’t get through. This not only prevents your home from reaching the ideal temperature; it will force your heating costs to rise and overwork your furnace. Check the manufacturer’s recommendations to see how often you should be replacing your filters.
- Make sure the supply air registers aren’t blocked: Don’t position furniture or curtains where they prevent the air from being delivered into your living spaces.
