Licensing
The baseline qualification you should look for is licensing. In the state where the technician’s company is located, they must be licensed. Without this, you have no way of ensuring that the technician who comes to your home has any knowledge of heating systems at all. California’s HVAC licensing requires either four years of experience as a journeyman or a similar amount of education and on-the-job experience.
Certifications
There are independent organizations that also provide training and certification for HVAC technicians. The best-known and most-reputable of these organizations is NATE, North American Technician Excellence. A NATE certification requires a technician to complete a training and pass a test, and the technician must be recertified every two years.
Mentorship
Even a young HVAC technician with fewer years on the job can be an excellent technician. This is largely dependent upon the mentorship they receive. When a company has been in business for many years, that’s a good indicator that they’re retaining highly experienced technicians who can provide the best possible guidance and mentorship to newer technicians.
Reputation
It should go without saying that you should choose a company with a good reputation in the community. How can you tell? You can check with the Chamber of Commerce or Better Business Bureau. You can read reviews online. But again, it’s a great sign when a company that has been in business for many years. They’ve been keeping customers happy for a very long time.
Reliability
While a long-lasting, licensed business with good reviews is probably reliable in general, there are a couple of things to check for. Does the business provide all the services you might need? Installation, maintenance, and repair will all be critical for your heating system eventually. And finally, what about emergencies? You’ll want to do business with a company that has 24-hour emergency service so you won’t freeze on a holiday weekend.
