Dealing With Static Electricity? Try A Whole-House Humidifier

If you find yourself dealing with static electricity buildup in the winter, dry indoor air is likely the problem. The air is naturally drier this time of year, bringing many discomforts including static electricity buildup. Here’s why installing a whole-house humidifier in your home is an ideal strategy for eliminating static electricity.

Without a humidifier during the heating season, the air in your home usually remains dry, even if it’s wet outside. Then, when you shuffle your feet on the carpet and go to touch something with your hand, you receive a nasty shock. You have probably experienced this when touching a light switch, electronic equipment or even another person.

Static electricity can build up in your body to 20,000 volts. This delivers a shock if you go to reach out for someone. It can also short out sensitive electronics and end up costing you money for repairs or replacements. Static electricity also can build up on your clothing or bedding, making the fabric stick to your skin. Hair charged with static electricity is no fun either.

The good news is that you can eliminate static electricity simply by adding humidity to your indoor air with a whole-house humidifier. With this equipment, you can control humidity so that it doesn’t go too low or too high. Just as dry air can result in static electricity, health problems and furniture damage, air that’s too moist has its own set of problems, including mold growth.

Another benefit of adding humidity to your air in the wintertime is that moist air feels warmer than dry air. In a properly humidified home, this allows you to turn down the thermostat a few degrees without losing any comfort. This reduces the amount of time you’re furnace is operating, saving on your energy bills.
